Stage 1 Goldfish

1. Enter the water safely. Enter shallow water from the poolside in a safe manner (Assistance may be provided. This may be via the steps or from the poolside).

2. Walking with shoulders in the water. Move across the pool with the water surface no lower than shoulder level. Suggested games – ‘Simon Says’ or ‘Flying airplane’ etc. Move forwards for a distance of 5 meters. Move backwards for a distance of 5 meters. Move sideways for distance of 5 meters.

3. Face washing. Scoop the water and wash face.

4. Showered from overhead. Be at ease with water showered from overhead.

5. Bubbles for 3-5 sec (Eyes Out). Blow bubbles for 3-5 sec through the mouth and 3-5 sec through the nose. If the swimmer struggling- suggest practicing at home (in the bath or bawl). Remember blowing bubble is just exhaling slowly, so practice it with face out of the water and ask to do the same in the water. As blowing on a candle (for the mouth), and humming (for the nose).

6. Put face in the water for 3-5 sec. Put face in the water for 3-5 sec.

7. Star float Back (+ support). Move from a flat floating position on the back and return to standing.

8. Star float Front (+ support). Move from a flat floating position on the front and return to standing.

9. P&G Front + support (face down). Push and glide from the poolside or floor on the front with support and change to a resting or standing position.

10. P&G Back + support. (ears in the water). Push and glide from the poolside or floor on the back with support and change to a resting or standing position. If the child is struggling with floating on their back equipment or support can be used to pass Level 1.

11. Three pool rules. Ask what the child is not allowed to do near the water.

No running. No shouting. No eating 2h before the lesson. No glass bottles. Always listen to an adult (teacher or parents). No swimming without the adult. Don’t go to the deep water etc.

12. Travel on the Back for 5m + support. Travel on the back a minimum distance of 5 meters with teachers support or flotation equipment. Ensure that if the manual help is given teacher is not helping to move forward.

13. Travel on the Front for 5m + support. Travel on the front a minimum distance of 5 meters. Ensure that if the manual help is given teacher is not helping to move forward.

14. Rotate Back to Front + support. Rotate from the back to the front position (using arms if needed) and gain a resting or standing position. With teachers support or flotation equipment.

15. Rotate Front to Back + support. Rotate from the front to the back position (using arms if needed) and gain a resting or standing position with teachers support or flotation equipment.

16. Exit the water safely. Exit shallow water from the poolside in a safe manner (Assistance may be provided. This may be via the steps or from the poolside).
