How to Avoid Common Swimming Injuries

Although swimming is often recommended as one of the best exercises to do while injured it can also cause injuries. Here are the most frequently injured body parts:

  • Shoulders- this is one of the most vulnerable parts for a swimmer. The most common type of shoulder injury is a rotator cuff impingement which is caused by pressure on the rotator cuff from part of the shoulder blade or scapula as the arm is lifted. To help avoid getting a shoulder injury while swimming make sure to exercise the shoulders outside of the pool. This constant strengthening and stretching of the surrounding muscles can help to build up flexibility and resistance.
  • Knees- Knee injuries are more likely in those swimmers who regularly do breast stroke. Alternating your swimming strokes can help individuals avoid damaging their knees, along with doing the correct stretching exercises before you even enter the pool. This can be a great way to strengthen and prepare the hamstrings and quadriceps.
  • Back- Swimming can be amazing for relieve back pain but can also be the source. This is due to the twisting motions. To prevent this pain from occurring swimmers must ensure they practice the correct technique and avoid any awkward or unnatural movements.
  • Hips- Hips are also at risk of becoming injured. The wide breast stroke kick can cause injuries, it can cause the pelvis and hips to lie in an awkward position. To ensure you minimise your risk of any injuries while swimming, remember to warm up properly beforehand and switch up your strokes.
